Lions finish 19-1 in conference play

The Lady Lions earn the North Division number seed for the ACCC State and Regional tournament by winning 19 of 20 conference games this season. The Lions suffered their only conference lost to Gadsden State but won the rest to perserve the number 1 seeding. The Lions finish regular season this Friday against Alabama Southern with game times at 1 and 3 PM. The location for the games will be determined later this week as the campus suffered damage from the tornados that ravaged Alabama on Wednesday. The softball stadium suffered damage to the outfield fence and the out door batting cage.

Lions Take 2 at Calhoun

Behind some strong offensive hitting the Lady Lions stay perfect in conference play by beating Calhoun twice at Decatur on April 9th. In game one of the double header the offensive charge was lead by Cortney McNett and Whitney Brown both going 3 for 4 with an RBI a piece. Megan Christiansen added 2 hits including a solo HR with 3 RBIs. Courtney Bailey went 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs. Michal Robertson and Heather Parker contributed a hit a piece to the attack. Heather Parker picked up the win allowing 6 hits and striking out 7.

Game two saw Kayla Snead get the win with Lauren Watts picking up the save. The offense was lead by Robertson and Christiansen who each went 3 for 4. Robertson had a triple while Christiansen added 3 doubles and 3 RBIs. Summer Wilkerson was 2 for 3 as McNett was 2 for 4 with a HR. Bailey was 1 for 2 with 2 sacrifices and an RBI. Katie Pierce added a hit. This puts the Lions 8-0 in conference play.

Win sweep Again

With Heather Parker throwing a 1 hit shut out in Game 1 and Laurin Watts adding a 2 hit shut out in game 2, the Lions managed to sweep Gadsden State at Gadsden winning 9-0 and 2-0 respectively. THe Lions had plenty of offensive power to back the pitching performances. Game 1 saw 14 hits scatter with Cortney McNett and Courtney Bailey both going 3-4. Bailey also added a Home Run to put the game out of reach in the fifth.Michal Robertson and Whitney Brown added 2 hits a piece with Robertson adding a Home run in the first.

Game 2 saw Jessica Bowman lead the offense with 2 hits and a double while Cortney McNett, Megan Christensen, Courtney Bailey, Whitney Brown and Katie pierce had a hit a piece.Watts struck out 5 gave up 1 walk in the 2-hit effort. Lions are at Decatur on Saturday facing Calhoun at 1 and 3 PM.

Lady Lions Start Conference Play

The Wallace State Softball team started conference play with 2 wins at Bevill State and 2 more at Snead State. On 29 April the Lady Lions opened their conference schedule by beating Bevill at Sumiton 4-3 in Game one. Heather Parker got the win going the distance. She also went 3 for 3 at the plate with a Home run in the 4-3 win. Katie Pierce added 3 hits in 4 at bats with 2 doubles and Cortney McNett was 2 for 4 with a double.
In game two it was Kayla Sneed picking up the win while striking out a season high 12 batters. She gave up 5 hits and one unearned run in the effort. Cortney McNett was 3-4 with 2 doubles. Heather Parker went 2-3. Whitney Brown was 2-4 with a double and 3 RBIs. Katie Pierce, Madison Scott and Laren Payne each added a hit.

At Boaz on 5 April, the Lady Lions swept Snead state with 2 shut outs on the afternoon. Game one saw Laurin Watts throw a 3 hit shut out while striking out 2. She was supported with 4 runs and 12 hits. Cortney McNett was 3-4, Megan Christiansen went 2-3 and Katie Pierce was 2-4. Madison Scott, Chandler Orr and Michal Robinson each added a hit in the shut out effort. In the night cap Kayla Sneed threw a gem of a game striking out 11 and going 6.1 innings before giving up a hit. She finished with a 2 hit shut out and only allowed 4 B players to reach base. 2 hits, one on an error and only 1 walk. The offense supported her with 10 hits and 6 runs. Megan Christiansen went 3 for 3 while Cortney Mcnett, Madison Scott and Lauren Payne were 2-3. Courtney Bailey, Jessica Bowman and Katie Pierce each added a hit a piece. The 4-0 start puts Wallace State on top of the North Division.


<h2>All-Americans</h2>
<p>STARKVILLE, Miss. – Fifty-six student athletes from 23 different institutions have been named to one of three 2010 Louisville Slugger/NFCA All NJCAA Division I All-American teams, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced on Wednesday.

2010 NJCAA Division I National Champion Miami Dade has four total selections, two first-team and two second-team, while national runner-up Wallace State also has four total selections, with three on the first team and one on the second.

Leading the way for Wallace State is pitcher Kelsey Dennis who went 27-0 during the regular season for a 0.53 ERA and 231 strikeouts.

Joining Dennis on the first team is infielder Saige Wright. Wright stole 41 bases this season and had a .359 batting average.

The final selection for Wallace State is outfielder Katie Pierce. Pierce recorded 46 hits and 15 runs this season and committed just one error in the field. Stephanie Needham was selected to the second team All-American. </p>

STARKVILLE, Miss. – The staff of 2010 national runners-up Wallace State Community College - Hanceville, including head coach Jayne Clem and assistant coach Tracy Grindrod, have been named as the 2010 National Fastpitch Coaches Association NJCAA Division I National Coaching Staff of the Year, the Association announced on Tuesday.

Clem and Grindrod led the Lady Lions to a 62-9 record on the year and a second place finish at the national tournament for the second consecutive year.

Wallace State went 19-1 in league play on the season and won the Alabama Community College Conference North Division title. The Lady Lions went onto win the ACCC and Region XXII titles, before fighting their way out of the elimination bracket and into the championship game at the national tournament with a 6-2 final record at the event.

Leading the Lady Lions on the field this season were 2010 Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Americans Kelsey Dennis, Saige Wright and Katie Pierce. Dennis finished the season with a 31-1 record and the fifth lowest ERA in all of NJCAA Division I at 0.69. She also posted the highest batting average on her team this season, leading the charge at .353.

On offense for the Lady Lions, Pierce and Wright proved to be a potent combination, batting .333 and .327, respectively. Pierce finished the year with 16 runs and 16 stolen bases, while Wright hit for extra bases 16 times and stole 43 bases of her own.

Earlier in the month, the Wallace State coaches were named as a finalist for the award by winning one of three Regional Coaching Staff of the Year awards. Also taking home regional honors this season were the staffs of Blinn College in the Midwest and Salt Lake Community College in the West.

<h2>Wallace gets 5 NFCA All-Region</h2>
<p>Navarro, Yavapai, Salt Lake, 2010 National Championship runners-up Wallace State and 2010 NJCAA Division I National Champions Miami-Dade each had four student-athletes earn all-region honors this season, while Yavapai, Salt Lake, Wallace State and Miami-Dade each added a fifth selection on the second team. Kelsey Dennis, Katie Pierce, Saige Wright and Stephanie Needham all made first team honors while Kristen Skinner was selected to the second team. <h2>Lady Lions finish Number 2 in the Nation</h2>
<p>After losing the first game at the national tournament, the Lions battled all the way back through the losers bracket to play for the national championship. The Lions lost game one to John A. Logan in a 7-8 battle where they had chances to win but just couldn't get the right hit at the right time. Next they faced Indian Hills from Iowa and they got back on track with a 9-0 win which featured 3 home runs in the 9-0 win. That set up the Lady. This placed the Lions in the Semi-finals with a game against the 2009 Champion Yavapai from Arizona. The Lions got plenty of offensive support from the whole line-up winning 8-4. In the Championship game the Lions faced a very fresh Miami-Dade college and ran out of gas losing 0-7 and placing second for the second year in a row. </p>
<h2>Wallace number 4 Seed at Nationals</h2>
<p>WSCC drew the number 4 seed at Nationals following a 56-7 season. They will face off against number 13 see John A. Logan from Carterville Illinois and the Region 24 Champion. <p>The Lady Lions Clinched a #1 seed in the ACCC Region 22 Tournament going 19-1 in conference play. They will start tournament play on Saturday at
12 PM at Liberty Park in Alabaster Alabama. The tournament winner earns a spot at the nationals in St George Utah. All games will be broadcast on the Internet. More to follow.

<p>The NJCAA released their pre-season softball poll this week and the Wallace State Lady Lions are ranked #2 in the nation. The rankings are compiled by NJCAA and are based on media guides and information obtained from coaches. The Lions are excited about their ranking but know the hard work lies ahead to get a chance to play and live up to the ranking.
