Wallace State Softball Team Earns Spot in Finals of ACCC Tournament
Alabaster, Ala.—The Wallace State-Hanceville softball team will take part in the ACCC Championship game for the ninth consecutive year. They earned a spot in the final game by defeating Central Alabama 3-1 in the winner’s bracket finals on Tuesday at Veteran’s Park in Alabaster.
“We’re right where we want to be right now,” said Wallace State coach Jayne Clem. “And the good thing is that we haven’t peaked yet. We haven’t shown anyone how we can really hit. We did it in spurts today. But we’re ready to show them tomorrow.”
The Lady Lions were led on Tuesday by a 3-for-3, 2RBI performance at the plate by Rachel Baucom. Baucom’s single in the fifth inning drove in runs by Hannah Strength and Ashley Smith.
Strength went 1-for-4 at bat. Smith and Dandi Ammons each went 1-for-3. Sallie Beth Burch drove in the Lady Lions’ first run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly which scored Baucom.
Pitcher Jennifer Sexton picked up the win. She threw the full seven inning game and gave up one run on four hits, walked three, and struck out nine batters.
The Lady Lions will play the winner of the Central-Wallace Dothan loser’s bracket game still to be decided at press time.
The Lady Lions now have a record of 62-8 this season. They are the defending ACCC Champions.
